Enjoy these inside winter activities with family or friends.
During the colder months, getting outside to exercise and have fun can be hard. It’s important for both your mind and body to stay active, even if you find yourself stuck inside. Although you may be impatiently awaiting the arrival of spring to spend time outdoors, there are plenty of indoor activities you might enjoy.
1. Puzzles
Puzzles are a great way to flex your brain’s muscles. There are plenty of different kinds of puzzles like word searches, crosswords, Sudoku, or even just a regular puzzle. The best part about puzzles is that you can choose different sizes and skill levels to challenge yourself. This keeps the mind busy and offers the chance to practice problem solving skills while also working out your dexterity.
2. Knitting/Crocheting/Sewing
Working with fabric to create something new can be a rewarding way to pass your time. Not only does it exercise your fine motor skills and keep your mind sharp, but at the end of a project you have a new craft that you can gift to a loved one. You could make yourself a scarf, gloves, or hat to help stay warm! You could even make new friend by joining a sewing circle. Check with local fabric stores to see if there are any in your community.
3. Reading
Tired of watching TV all day long? Why not try picking up a good book? Reading is a great way to stay entertained and pass the time, while improving brain function and staying informed. You can even make it a group activity by starting a book club with friends and family! If your eyes need a rest from the fine print, audiobooks are a great alternative that many libraries offer as a free resource.
4. Museum Visits
Visiting a museum is a wonderful and engaging way to spend a day in doors. From history museums to art museums, there are always new things you can learn and experience. What’s better, many museums may offer a discount or special pricing for seniors, children, or veterans, making trips a budget friendly activity!
5. Keep Active
Exercising inside is a great way to spend an afternoon and care for your physical health. It could be as simple as low impact activities like yoga or meeting up with some friends somewhere local like a mall to get your daily steps in! Many local community centers may even offer dance classes to keep you moving.
Staying physically and mentally active keeps you healthy and can improve your quality of life. Many programs are available to seniors, like Programs of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), that schedule activities to keep you engaged and socializing throughout the year.
